Dolls and Excuses...

Greetings all!

It has been awhile, but I have reasons! My little girl got into an amazing public/charter school, and so we picked up and moved across town to be closer to the school. I am still catching up and getting my ducks in a row, and I still don't have internet at my house! But still crafty... Check out the latest dolls...

Lolita Punk

I have been making dolls since I was six or seven years old. There is something about making dolls that really feeds my soul. They have transformed in shape and style over the years, sometimes primative or ethnic, other times, pure baby doll.

Lately I have wanted to make a doll with a more edgy feel, still pretty, and "girly" but with funk. I have recently discovered a book called Gothic Lolita Punk by Rico Komanoya, and was inspired by the images.

I have spent the last coupla days on this doll, Lolita Punk. And I just love her. She is the first in a new series. I want to work on punk Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland, and Queen of hearts dolls...

Fish-n-Shrooms

The CraftMobb fell off there for a few weeks! I been busy though... Check out the funky plush fish. The little mirror on each scale was attached with hand embroidery. This baby took some time and loving attention. It is 14" long, and about 12" wide...

I have also been obsessed with making these groovy little mushrooms out of fabric scraps. They are wieghted with poly-pellets, and so they have a crooked mushroomy stance.

Hand/ Arm Warmers - Fingerless Gloves

I have a bunch of wool sweaters that I have been chopping up and making groovy stuff with. I really dig fingerless gloves, and this is my first pair. I used 2 merino sweaters, (one light blue, the other peacock blue) that I felted by washing them in hot, and then dried in the dyer.

The darker sweater had these funky cuffs with covered buttons. I chopped about 8" off of the light sweater, and chopped the whole cuff, about 9" off the other. Then removed the buttons.

I turned the light blue sweater inside out and then machine sewed a line from the top down about 3" in, and about an inch from the edge, for the thumb. I hand embroidered these pieces before wrapping the cuff around them, and hand stitching with a cross stitch. I then added 3 of the buttons.

This instruction idea can be used with many sweater pieces. For sizing wrap a rectangular piece of sweater around your arm to see how wide and long it needs to be. Try several types of textures, and more than one or two colors. This is freestyle sewing, there really isn't a pattern, you gotta just go with it!

Felting is JUICY!

Felting is such a wonderful craft. I remember when I first discovered it. I was soo excited! Watching those wool fibers mesh into one another was amazing. I have since taught myself to "wet" felt flowers as well.

This is an orchid that I needle felted with white and fuschia wool roving, it has some embroidery and bead detail. This lotus is needle felted as well, I added a chunky turquoise bead to the center, and added a pin to the back.

AVAOriginal has this gorgeous poppy neck piece on her etsy page. It looks like it is wet felted.

Owl Softie Tutorial

I make these little plush owlies everytime I do a craft show. They are super simple to make, and I always sell bunches of them. They are hard to resist! These owlies can be filled with lavender or another dried flower/ herb and used as a sachet. They make great gifts for owl lovers, or without the buttons, for babies and toddlers. They make funky, fun pincushins.

Begin by cutting out 2 matching owlish shaped pieces. Mine is about 6" at the widest point, and 6" from the tip of the ear to the bottom. Cut several templates of paper until you are happy with the shape.

Choose a contrasting fabric, cut and iron a piece of fusible/iron-on web to it. Then cut the contrasting fabric into a shape similar to the one below. (I always skip this step, and sew directly)

Remove the paper backing and iron on to one of the main body pieces.

Stitch around the edge of the smaller front piece using a decorative embroidery stitch. I used the banket stitch for this one.

At this point I sew the main front and back pieces together (right sides facing each other) by hand or by machine, leaving the bottom open for stuffing. Clip the v point between the ears, and where the ears meet the body. Also make a few clips around the round part of the body. This will help the body lay right when you turn it. Be careful not to clip the seam. Turn inside out.

Once the owl is stuffed, turn in about 1/2 inch and sew closed.

This is where I add the beak and eyes. I like having the body done when I add details, though this step can be done befor the body is constructed.

I added these buttons, then removed them, they were too stark. I replaced them with the felt circles and buttons in the first picture. For other examples of my owls and thier eyes visit this earlier post .

sweater maddness! Felting!

Inspired by the book Sweater Chop Shop, by Crispina French, and buy all the wool recycling goings on on Etsy these days, I went out and bought 8 wool sweaters of varying thicknesses. Some were merino, others lambs wool, some blends, others 100% percent. I began by felting them, washing them in hot water, and then drying on medium. This is what they looked like felted and ready.

I spent hours imagining the possibilities, and finally dove in with a pair of scissors. I decided to begin with a wrap sweater, so far I am using three different sweaters, and will likely pull in another one or maybe two before its over.

It was kinda scary, cutting them up. The peacock blue one was a delicious Banana Republic merino. But it is an adventure! I will post the finished product when through.

Serpent Warrior- art doll

I have always been in love with mythical creatures. A secret part of me believes I am descended from fairies, ancient magical ancestors. I often try to discern the magical linage of those around me by observing their physical forms as well as mannerisms, or speech patterns, etc... It makes sense then, that I would often draw and create creatures with strange features.

I remember the first doll I made,I was five or six years old. It was a Christmas gift for my younger sister. The doll was fashioned from crude tubes cranked out of a children's knitting machine. When she opened it she howled with laughter. My mom took a photo right at that very second, and that moment has been made immortal.

I have been making dolls ever since, I wish now that I had the forethought to document with pictures along the way. Alas, I have a have a blurred trail of doll memories on which to draw upon.

The Serpent Warrior Goddess draws upon my talent and love for doll making, and my connection to other dimensions/realities/lifetimes. Her face is polymer, a material I haven't touched for years, though have always had an affinity for. This was also my first attempt at ball joints, which I found, are quite simple. I used glass beads for the joints, I needed something decorative, I wanted the arms exposed. The body is machine and hand-sitched cotton fabric. She has a leather wrap top and a lace headress with ostrich and peacock feather bits. Her staff has a smooth rose quartz stone. She measures 10" tall.

I so enjoyed existing in her world during manifestation. She is one of my most curious creations.

Amazing Vegetable Pie: vegetarian/ vegan

This recipe is quite simple and always delicious!

Begin by dicing a and boiling a potato. While it is cooking saute onion, garlic, and celery.
Chose several FRESH vegetables, I usualy use 2-4 different veggies, whetever is in the fridge.

I recommend: carrots, kale, broccoli, asparagus, corn, spinich, cabage, green beans, red bell pepper, whatever! For this pie I used bok choy, zuchinni, and cilantro.

Chop your veggies and add to the onion. Season with Braggs, or soy sauce, seasame seed oil, and dried/fresh herbs. Cover and let this simmer on low/med for 10 min. Turn off the potatoes as soon as they are soft, drain and add to the veg mixture.

Gravy time. Make your favorite gravy! I melt a pat of Earth Balance Buttery Spread in a small pan. I then mix about 1 1/2 TBSP of flour in a cup of warm water till dissolved. Pour this on the butter in pan and add some boullion (Better than Boullion is super!). Let this cook on low till it thickens, add more water if needed, and stir often.

CRUST!!
I use 1 1/2 cup of white unbleached flour, and 1/2 cup of whole spelt flour. Use what you like, you just need 2 cups. Add 1 TSP of sea salt, and 1 TBSP of dried herbs (dill). Measure 3/4 cup of Earth Balance, or butter. Blend with your fingers until it is mealy looking. Add 2-6 TBSP of ICE cold water, one TBPS at a time, until your dough has formed, stop before it gets too sticky. Divide ball in half and roll on floured surface, then add to pie dish.

Add veggies and gravy to pie bottom...

Cover with the other half of pie crust. I like to make it pretty with leaves and berries made out of left over pie crust. Be sure to poke some fork holes into top crust.

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 20-25 min or until crust is golden brown. I broil on low for about 2-5 minutes to get that golden color.

It is a hit everytime! Enjoy! ~xoxi

Wrap You in my LOVE...

A few months a go I made a crib-sized quilt for my baby niece. My daughter, who is five, would get up every morning and wrap herself in it, and say "mine" with a little smile. So, I decided to work on a quilt for her Christmas present. I was up many a late night, and enjoyed every moment of making it. And she loves it so much!

I used a wool blend felt for the flower appliques...

Dang! It has been a minute since I have sat my butt down here at the computer to write a CraftMobb post. My apologies! Chrismas had me crazy, I was doin' craft shows, and making presents, working my 40 hr a week desk job, and being a mommy and daddy to my 5 year old. WHEW!

These are a few of the items I made over the last month...

This hood is 100% wool! It's made from soft delicious (and pricey) yarn that I purchased at "Fancy Tiger", our premiere indie craft store here in Denver.

These hats are made with doubled yarn, and water felted flowers, and are available at a local beauty salon called "Bliss".

Last I checked they were still available. My friend who works there says that they are too big for most of the women who try them on. I guess a lot of little headed ladies are clients there.

If they don't sell at the salon soon, I will put them in my esty store :)~xoxi

Knit-alicious!

It's official I am a knit-aholic. I have been having so much fun with my new medium.I have even learned to cable knit:) Scarf lette's are wonderful, they can have so much flavor, and yet they don't take a year to finish. This is the one with the cable, is made with a wool blend, and has a crocheted ruffle, and a gorgeous water felted flower

The next one is my first scarflette, the one from an earlier post. It has a leather flower accent.

And introducing...the Cowl Hood Scarf!
This one is soo versitile, it can be pulled down over the tops of the shoulders, and makes a gorgeous cowl.

My crafty sista, Faatma recently taught me how to knit. Once upon a time, long long ago, I taught her to crochet, and she returned the favor. I was a crochet snob, and didn't want to learn. I am fast and furious with a crochet needle, so much so that I actually injured my wrist. I was desperate for some fiber craft, and thought that knitting wouldn't impact my wrist in the same way that crochet does.

But surprise- surprise, I really dig it. If the yarn is chunky and the needles are fat, I can move a project along at enjoyable pace. So, lo and behold...

let me just preface, I do spend a good amount of time online, but some folks live here. And while I live in the extra sunny city of Denver, I WILL be out of doors whenever the weather permits...which is most days.

As the seasons change and cold weather visits us daily there are a number of events and thangs all over my city and all over the wilderness of North America geared at keeping folks warm over the cold months. Honestly y'all we are spoiled in North America. So lets act like we care...no lets just CARE about our human family and support the food, clothes and shelter drives as best we can.

At my crib we go thru our closets seasonally and purge and donate to friends, family and to clothes drives... sometimes Lalania and I even donate our creations. This year we found this @ http://clutterpunk.blogspot.com/

People are constantly combing through Etsy and other sites with a single search term, a one word tag: owl.

What is this fascination, this addiction so many of us have?
Owls have a certain mystery...

I make plush owls quite often. The larger ones are pillow sized and make funky couch and bed decor. The small ones are just irresistable, and they sell like hotcakes. I use bright prints, often designer fabrics, which I purchase on Etsy (Denver doesn't have the best fabric selection), felt, and funky buttons. I currently have several for sale at BridgeWater Arts, in Boston. And I just finished making a bunch for an upcoming craft show.

Craftmobbin everyweek at an undisclosed location... we build on bidness, children, men, money and of course craft... I made a crown (not decided if its for sale or not) and she made 'lil owls and pieced together scraps for a doll dress...

some days there's drank involved (coffee lightly sweetened with agave nectar)... other days smoke (american spirit in the yellow pack)... always 3rd eye visions (big ups to Heiroglyphics for that album) and always some science meets magic type epiphinating in craft...

As winter fast approaches I find myself increasingly busier, (I am not complaining, crafty fiend that I am). I needed a break from the production line, and decided to make a little somethin’ just for me. I love felt & embroidery, so when I picked up Donna Koolers -Kool Felt Embroidery, I knew it was on.
